Visits to the major U.S. news websites have been reduced since Google published its artificial intelligence search function last year, with some that fell by 40%, according to new data.
Of the 50 main news domains, 37 suffered a decrease in year -on -year traffic after the launch of Google AI general views last May, according to Similarweb.
Dramatic abandonment comes despite qualification events that included Donald Trump’s assassination attempted last summer, his impressive election victory over Kamala Harris a few months later, and the crisis over the new President’s fare policies.
“The data show absolutely the new AI products that Google has announced that they affect the traffic of news publishers,” The Danielle Coffey, President and CEO of News/Media Alliance, told The Post Danielle Coffey.
“In addition to all SEO changes that have recently decreased traffic in traditional search, this is true that it will adversely affect our ability to invest in quality journalism,” added Coffey, the non -profit commercial association represents more than 2,200 news organizations.
Forbes and Huffost were the most important, each lost 40% of their traffic, while DailyMail.com fell by 32% and CNN.com fell by 28%, according to Similarweb.
Post publication and Sister Wall Street Journal suffered falls of 27% and 17%, respectively, the data were displayed. Fox News.com fell 24%.

Comscore, which uses a different methodology from Wisonweb to track traffic, found that Nypost Network, which includes nypost.com and affiliated properties such as Decider and Page Six, obtained 433 million pages views in June 2024 before falling to 381 million in May 2025, a loss of 12%.
In the meantime, WSJ.com-Part of Dow Jones, owned by News Corp, and Fox News.com registered slight increases in the same period, one of the few publications for traffic, according to Comscore.
The New York Times and the Washington Post dropped 0.7% and 6%, respectively, found Comscore.
The publication that saw the greatest gains, according to Similarweb, included mensjournal.com (+415%), Cooldown.com (+96%) and indiattimes.com (+77%).
A Google spokesman denied Ai’s push to be guilty of crafting traffic.
“More than any other company, Google prioritizes the sending of traffic to the web and we continue to send thousands of clicks to websites every day,” said the representative in the post Tuesday.
“We have seen many inaccurate claims on search traffic, often based on speculative or incomplete information, questionable methodology or data that precede the general views of AI. The new experiences of the IA allow people to ask even more questions, which creates new opportunities for companies and the content that are discovered.”
The company added that there are limitations known to the data set of similar, as it only looks at the desktop and the mobile web, not the activity of the application.
Google AI general views (automated summaries fed by their Gemini model) appear at the top of the results pages and respond directly to user consultations, often preventing the need for users from going to the source of the information.
Since the launch of AI’s general views, many publishers have reported strong drops in both clicks and clicks (CTR). According to multiple studies, the Middle CTR for the higher organic result of consultations that triggers the general views of the AI was reduced from 7.3% in March 2024 to 2.6% in March 2025.
Google also recently published AI mode: An advanced search experience that offers detailed and conversation answers to complex consultations.
Despite stating earlier that the AI general views will not appear for “harsh news” due to the concern for freshness and factuality, a picture of AIO appeared in search of the results of “Death of Anne Burrell” shortly after the story exploded.
A recent Google document now claims that the AI general views will appear when they add value and the system has a great deal of confidence in the response, although efforts are being made to exclude sensitive or dangerous issues.
The company stated that general visits to the web and organic search traffic have increased as a year -on -year, and that the general views of the AI are designed to improve the user’s experience by passing more links to a wide range of sources.
Google added that publishers may experience traffic fluctuations for many reasons that have no relation to AI, including seasonal demand, change of users’ preferences and regular algorithm updates.
